Chariho Community Educational Projects Grants Awarded From 2003 to 2009
2003 v Chariho Middle School, 6th Grade; Jennifer Gleason - jen.gleason@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000 A project to create vivid mental imagery using descriptive language. Funding is for digital cameras to take pictures of scenic South County locations and create vivid written descriptions from the photos.
v Chariho Middle School Library Media Center; Kate Kelley – kate.kelley@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000 A project to improve the 6th grade student magazine by purchasing desktop publishing software for the media center. Software eventually will be used for many middle school applications.
v Chariho Middle School Library Media Center; Michelle Steever – michelle.steever@chariho.k12.ri.us $1400 A grant to foster a passion for good literature by involving 5th graders from the Middle School, Hope Valley and Ashaway in the Rooster Games. The games apply information from assigned readings to creative thinking exercises.
v Charlestown Elementary School PTO - hollyeaves@cox.net $1000 Funding for expansion of the elementary school playground for children ages 5 – 12. Total cost of the project is $24,000 with $12,000 in hand and $10,000 pledged from Town of Charlestown.
v Chariho Middle School Library Media Center; Kate Kelley – kate.kelley@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000 Funds to be used to purchase 29 books on tape or CD to create an audio library for all students at Chariho Middle School. Audio books address the needs of students who are struggling and reluctant readers.
v Ashaway Elementary School; Karen Mann – karen.mann@chariho k12.ri.us $910 This project raises awareness of cultural diversity. The entire school spends one school year learning the culture of Mexico. Students will see Mexican performers, authors, artists, books and foods and observe several Mexican holidays.
v Charlestown Elementary School, 3rd Grade: Lori Rathbone – lori.rathbone@chariho.k12.ri.us $500 In 1998, a project began to teach students about other towns. Two puppets traveled by Internet to other locales where students added to a diary accompanying the pup pets. Funds added 10 Atlases so students could follow each puppets’ trip.
v Chariho High School Library Media Center; Elizabeth Sinwell – ehsin@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000 The project bought 100 copies of The Secret Life of Bees and then enlisted students, teachers, parents and others from the Chariho area to read the book. It united high school and adult readers in a common experience focused on literacy.
v Chariho Middle School Library Media Center; Michelle Steever – michelle.steever@chariho.k12.ri.us $715 The funding bought cameras and software needed to publish an online newspaper for the school. Students were then able to discover more about the world of journalists, editors, photographers, layout designers and other newspaper staff.
v Hope Valley Elementary School; Elizabeth Pare - uerj2065@aol.com $1000 The project engaged all of the school’s students in creating an interactive mural depicting Hopkinton’s past, present and future. The mural focuses on ten familiar town destinations. An educational flip pad is attached next to each sites’ picture.
2004 v Richmond Elementary School, Grades 3 - 4; Maureen Ciuryla - maureen.ciuryla@chariho.k12.ri.us $500 The project uses audio tapes with books to help students overcome severe reading disabilities.
v Chariho Middle School Reading Program; Susan Davis - susan.davis@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000 The Reading Lab at the middle school created home/school partnerships of students, teachers and parents to help all parties better understand their role in improving student reading skills.
v Ashaway Elementary School, Grades 3 – 5; Kelly Gordon - kelly.gordon@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000 The project promotes healthier lifestyles among students by supplying them with pedometers used to monitor time spent achieving physical activity milestones set by the physical education staff.
v Chariho High School, Social Studies Dept; James Peters - james.peters@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000 This project increases students’ awareness of the history of the three towns in the school district. Students created Internet presentations that can be accessed by residents and visitors to region.
v Chariho High School, Library Media Center; Elizabeth Sinwell - ehsin@chariho.k12.ri.us $500 The goal is to teach students to use oral, written and graphic means to better communicate with an audience. The funds bought the computer tools needed to create effective multi-media presentations.
v Richmond Elementary School, 3rd Grade Jeanne Garr & Martha Stuart - jeanne.garr@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000 The project purchased three Roamer Robots that were “taught” to draw various geometric shapes. The robots help young students convert mental images into real geometric designs.
v Woman’s Resource Center of South County Amy Retsinus & Alicia Ciprian - acipriano@wrcsc.org $500 The project created support groups that are open to female high school students who wish to discuss issues involving relationships and gender in an educational and confidential setting.
v Chariho High School Library Media Center Elizabeth Sinwell & Mary Moen - mary.moen@chariho.k12.ri.us $1,000 The grant continues a community-wide program begun in 2003. A book is selected and copies circulated round the community. Copies are read by students, parents and faculty then discussed in after-hours programs
v Chariho Middle School, Technology Students Association, Paul DiRita - paul.derita@chariho.k12.ri.us $900 The grant partly funded a program to improve students’ critical thinking skills by having them build robots. The funds bought a portable computer that can change the robots’ skills during in competitions outside the school.
The next four applications were done more economically by merging them into two grants and sharing resources.
v Chariho High School After School Art Club, Synora Matacia - synoramatacia@chariho.k12.ri.us $900 v Chariho High School Arts Center, Debra Engel - dengel@excite.com $900 These two grants approached arts appreciation using different mediums but culminated in Public Gallery Nights and had need for a common need for a display case to safely display students’ art projects. The two awards were for art materials. The Chariho Career & Technical Center was awarded $500 build the display case.
v Charlestown Elementary School, Grade 4, Heidi Fee & Susan Killingbeck - heidifee@cox.net $300 v Charlestown Elementary School, Grade 2, Laurie Pearce $300 Both projects involve bird observation that requires bird feeders of various types and other materials. Grade 2 students will create a field guide for local species while Grade 4 is creating a mini-refuge adjacent to the school.
2005 v Chariho High School & Middle School, Michael Reeves - michael.reeves@chariho.k12.ri.net $1000 Funds provide materials and training for adventure programming. Adventure programs are activities that help students learn respect, cooperation, teamwork, problem-solving, and have fun in the process.
v Chariho High School, Barbara Volpe - BV2521@cox.net $600 Grant will buy the novels Tuesdays with Morrie and Five People You’ll Meet in Heaven. The two novels will enhance the Grade 11 honors program by adding literature from contemporary authors to the “old classics”.
v Chariho Middle School, Donna Walsh - donna.walsh@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000 Program organizes the school into smaller-than-class-size groups who will have a hands-on opportunity to research bridge building, organize a construction company and, over three years, build a model bridge.

Six copies of eight different titles will be available for teachers and students to use.

v Chariho Career & Technical Center, Grace M. Pagel $900 Grant provides the EMT Training Program with funds for student transportation to emergency rooms and ambulance corps where they can gain greater appreciation for the operation of emergency medical facilities.

digital audiobook would enable students to listen to a book without
requiring any additional equipment on their part. The Library will purchase
11 audiobooks that would be available to check out of the library just like
any other printed material. This would allow differentiated
instruction, and motivate students who would not ordinarily choose a lengthy
book to read but will encourage students to listen to a book at or slightly

fold. First to provide the students with an opportunity to learn how we
interact with each other and our natural world, specifically water
