“Lighthouses in Rhode Island” – Funds would be used to purchase Flip video cameras with accessories to be used in the classroom by students.  Students will research lighthouses in Rhode Island and build a model.  They will then film their models from different perspectives to answer questions.

“People of Ancient Times” - The 6th grade teachers have created a project that incorporates social studies content standards with ELA writing standards and information literacy skills.  Students will write a research paper in MLA format incorporating research, Cornell Note Taking, and writing skills.

“Document Cameras” - Teachers need classroom equipment that provides live image capture of documents, pictures, textbooks, and three-dimensional objects.  10 IPEBO document cameras would be used in science classrooms in grades 6 - 8 for larger than life image projection.

“Salt Marsh Nursery” – Funds would be used to purchase 8 Grow Light Systems.  Students would be involved in the Save the Bay Salt Marsh Nursery Program.  They would visit an area salt marsh in the fall and learn about the different species of plants that grow in these areas and collect seeds to start seedlings in early Spring to plant later to help the marshes.

“Breads for the Food Pantry” - This Family and Consumer Science Project would incorporate a community service/nutrition lesson in the Parenting/Child Development classes. The goal will be to incorporate a hands-on lesson in child nutrition to students and to bake fruit/nut bread or whole-rolls to be brought to the Community Food Pantry.

“Healthy Snacks” - Primary purpose of the project is for older students to work with the younger student in the preparation of healthy snacks.  The students will travel to each elementary school in the District to: act as role models, practice public speaking, teach how to read and understand labels, and teach the proper way to prepare food.

Playaways, the world’s first self-playing digital audiobook would enable students to listen to a book without requiring any additional equipment on their part.  The Library will purchase 11 audiobooks that would be available to check out of the library just like any other printed material.  This would allow differentiated instruction, and motivate students who would not ordinarily choose a lengthy book to read but will encourage students to listen to a book at or slightly above their reading level.

Fly Fishing Club: The goal of this program is three fold.  First to provide the students with an opportunity to learn how we interact with each other and our natural world, specifically water resources.  Secondly, to provide exposure to a life long physical and mental health activity, fly tying and fly fishing.  Lastly we are trying to engage students in a learning activity to increase their understanding of macro-invertebrate populations within the Wood Pawcatuck Watershed so   they can make positive decisions about this precious natural resource.

The grant continues a community-wide program begun in 2003.  The book, The Memory of Running by Ron McLarty, will be circulated round the community.  Copies are read by students, parents, and faculty then literacy events are planned with the public libraries.

This project raises awareness of cultural diversity.  The entire school spends one school year learning the culture of Mexico.  Students will see Mexican performers, authors, artists, books and foods and observe several Mexican holidays.

In 1998, a project began to teach students about other towns. Two puppets traveled by Internet to other locales where students added to a diary accompanying the pup   pets. Funds  added 10 Atlases so students could follow each puppets’ trip.

The project bought 100 copies of The Secret Life of Bees and then enlisted students, teachers, parents and others from the Chariho area to read the book.  It united high school and adult readers in a common experience  focused on literacy.

The project engaged all of the school’s students in creating an interactive mural depicting Hopkinton’s past, present and future.  The mural focuses on ten familiar town destinations.  An educational flip pad is attached next to each sites’ picture.
