“Reading Benchmark Assessment” – New assessment kits will be used by classroom teachers to conduct running record assessments.  The kits have been updated and will provide teachers with an abundance of summative data to guide instruction.

“Sensory Garden” – Created an interactive sensory environment that will serve the needs of all Chariho students and community members.

“Blutrack Project” – This project purchased Blutrack supplies and stopwatches to support physical science activities on motion  and energy.

 “Rhode Island History” - The goal of this project is to provide literacy rich social studies classrooms with sources on Rhode Island history to support the Rhode Island grade span expectations in Rhode Island History curriculum.

“Chariho Reads” - Funds continue the annual  program that circulates a carefully chosen book among students, teachers, staff and parents.  Subsequent discussions in school and after school promote inter-generation communications.

·         Chariho High School, Library Media Center, Mary Manning – mary.manning@chariho.k12.ri.us                      $   358

“Computer Copyholders” - With such limited space in the Library Media Center, the computers are positioned close together, which doesn’t allow students to place reference material next to the computers so they may type.  With copyholders attached to the computers, this problem is solved.

“Improving Literacy with Audiobooks” – The purpose of this project is to continue purchasing audiobooks to engage the reluctant and remedial reader in the same novels as their peers.

“Ronald McDonald House Dinner Project” – Purpose of the grant is to prepare dinner for the Providence Ronald McDonald House , so that the students gain experience in catering and transporting food..

“Multi-sensory Phonics and Reading”- To purchase a variety of hands on and reference materials to use in implementing a hands on, multi-sensory approach to teaching phonics and reading to both struggling and grade level readers.

“Handwriting without Tears” - The purpose of this program would be to make handwriting a natural and automatic skill for children.  This program works nicely with special needs students as well as typical developing students.

·         Chariho Middle School Grade 6, Etta Zasloff  elzas@chariho.k12.ri.us                                                                          $ 438

“Dig It!” - This project strengthens the connection of social studies, literature, and drama by providing every student in the production with a complete script of the play “Dig It!”, a musical tale of ancient civilizations, by John Jacobson, to be used as a classroom book selection during reading instruction prior to developing the play for performance to all parents and all other sixth graders in the school.

“Literature Circle Read-a-thon” - The purpose is to teach common theme to multi-level literature based groups, to combine literature with community service project to enhance the lives and learning of needy preschoolers, and to strengthen the values and integrity of the Middle School students.

“Media Creator” - To purchase software and supplies in order to enable teachers to transfer video streaming files to DVD’s for playback in the classroom on more traditional equipment.

“Ancient India” - In order to better align the K-12 Social Studies Curriculum with the Natural History Standards, Ancient India is a new topic added to the curriculum.  This grant will purchase books on Ancient India and improve the small collection.

“Mentor – Chariho” - This grant will enhance the Mentor Program in Chariho.  It will provide training for new mentors.

·         Chariho High School, Michele Merlino Michele.merlino@chariho.k12.ri.us                                                                     $ 150

“Elizabeth Buffam Chase House Project” - This project will provide for quilting supplies to be used in the Family and Consumer Science program.  At the completion of the project, these donated quilts will be provide to the recipients at the Eizabeth Buffam Chase House.

·         Chariho High School, Michele Merlino  Michele.merlino@chariho.k12.ri.us                                                                    $ 150

“Breads for the Food Pantry” - This Family and Consumer Science Project would incorporate a community service/nutrition lesson in the Parenting/Child Development classes. The goal will be to incorporate a hands-on lesson in child nutrition to students and to bake fruit/nut bread or whole-rolls to be brought to the Community Food Pantry.     

·         Career & Technical, Linda Musch  lsmus@chariho.k12.ri.us                                                                                               $ 500

“Healthy Snacks” - Primary purpose of the project is for older students to work with the younger student in the preparation of healthy snacks.  The students will travel to each elementary school in the District to: act as role models, practice public speaking, teach how to read and understand labels, and teach the proper way to prepare food.

“Cosmetology Community Service” - The purpose is to provide Cosmetology students with an ongoing service project by providing all free services to the people who are from the area and use the Wood River Health Center.  The grant will purchase supplies needed to perform the free service.
