Grants Awarded in the Spring and Fall 2007 Cycle

CCEP Grants Funded – Spring 2007

·         Chariho Middle School Library Media Center,  Michelle Steever     michelle.steever@chariho.k12.ri.us                   $ 505

Playaways, the world’s first self-playing digital audiobook would enable students to listen to a book without requiring any additional equipment on their part.  The Library will purchase 11 audiobooks that would be available to check out of the library just like any other printed material.  This would allow differentiated instruction, and motivate students who would not ordinarily choose a lengthy book to read but will encourage students to listen to a book at or slightly above their reading level.

·         Chariho Middle School Grade 7/8,  Dan Potts   dan.potts@chariho.k12.ri.us                                                                 $ 1,000

Fly Fishing Club: The goal of this program is three fold.  First to provide the students with an opportunity to learn how we interact with each other and our natural world, specifically water resources.  Secondly, to provide exposure to a life long physical and mental health activity, fly tying and fly fishing.  Lastly we are trying to engage students in a learning activity to increase their understanding of macro-invertebrate populations within the Wood Pawcatuck Watershed so they can make positive decisions about this precious natural resource.

·         Chariho Tri-Town Task Force   paulaatcttf@cox.net                                                                                                           $ 1,000

Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Education for Parents of Teenagers: The project will    provide 3 to 4 parent sessions on the current use and abuse of alcohol and other drug as well as education on current topics, such as internet use, mental health issues, etc. The goal is to educate Chariho community members to be informed in the current trends that put our children at risk.
