Richmond Elementary School, Jeanne Garr, Mary Ellen Sposato, and Allison Ward -jeanne.garr@chariho.k12.ri.us $1,000 The grant is designed to promote and excite students about reading in the fourth grade by participating in America’s Battle of the Books program. Funds will be used to purchase “Books on Tape” and listening centers so that all students may have access to a wide range of Grade 2 through 6 reading levels. The culminating activity will be a participation in friendly competition in May.
Chariho High School, Michel Merlino michele.merlino@chariho.k12.ri.us. $629 Child Growth and Development grant will provide funding for one realistic infant simulator. Students will be responsible for making informed decisions about child care and will gain insight into the tasks and temperament needed to be a responsible parent.
Chariho High School, Mary Moen mary.moen@chariho.k12.ri.us $1,000 The grant continues a community-wide program begun in 2003. The book, The Memory of Running by Ron McLarty, will be circulated round the community. Copies are read by students, parents, and faculty then literacy events are planned with the public libraries.
Chariho Middle School Library Media Center, Michelle Steever michelle.steever@chariho.k12.ri.us $535.50 The goal is to enable students to create new information, not only to consume it. Funding would provide headphones and microphones so that students would be allowed to record voice narratives to add to Powerpoint presentations, photo story videos, and other programs.
Chariho Middle School Library Media Center and Grade 7, Michelle Steever - michelle.steever@chariho.k12.ri.us $400 Students will learn about the Underground Railroad, the rules people played, the signs runaway slaves needed to understand during their escape, and the risks these people took to escape and to stand by their beliefs. Funds will be used to purchase multi-level books so that all may participate in the discussions and projects.
Chariho High School, Todd Grimes and Ben Jordan - todd.grimes@chariho.k12.ri.us $ 1,000 The goal is to provide all Seniors with up-to-date training in First Aid/CPR/AED in partnership with the American Red Cross in preparing students to become informed and compassionate citizens. The funds will be used to purchase sets of DVD’s and Manuals.
Chariho Career & Technical Center, Linda Musch - lsmus@charih.k12.ri.us $900 The project will be having Culinary Arts students visiting each elementary school to teach K through Grade 4 students about healthy eating habits and how to make healthy snacks. Funding covers the cost of healthy snacks.
Chariho Middle School Library Media Center, Michelle Steever - michelle.steever@chariho.k12.ri.us $535.50 The goal is to raise reading comprehension at the Middle Level. Funds would provide listening center equipment to enable groups of students to listen to books on audio tapes which research has found listening to orally presented material improves vocabulary and comprehension to the less able reader.
