Chariho Community Educational Projects Grants

Grants Awarded in the Spring and Fall 2005 Cycle

CCEP Grants Funded – Spring 2005

Chariho High School & Middle School, Michael Reeves, Social Worker $1000.00

Provides staff with materials and training for adventure programming. Adventure programs are activities, initiatives, and challenges that help students learn respect, cooperation, teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making, and have fun in the process.

Chariho High School, Barbara Volpe, English Teacher                                 $600.00

Grant will purchase the novels Tuesdays with Morrie and Five People You’ll Meet in Heaven. Reading these two novels will enhance the 11th grade honors program by providing them with current literature by contemporary authors that supplements the “old classics”.

Chariho Middle School, Donna Walsh, Advisor                                             $1000.00

Program organizes the school into smaller-than-class-size groups, each with a teacher advisor.  Each group will have a hands-on opportunity to explore some of the careers related to building a public project - in this case a bridge. Students will research bridge building, organize a construction company and, over three years, build a model bridge.

Chariho Middle School, Paul DeRita, Technology Ed. Teacher                $1000.00

Funds will purchase the equipment and materials that provide middle school students with an exploratory experience identifying and using plastics. They will learn the recycling opportunities for this material and the most common methods of shaping and forming raw plastics into useful products.

Chariho High School, Mary Moen, Library Media Specialist                         $386.00

Grant will promote Literature Circles and read-aloud opportunities for students using books from the 2006 Rhode Island Teen Book Award list. Six copies of eight different titles will be purchased and made available for teachers and students to use.

Charlestown Elementary School, Cynthia Rieser-Jones, Librarian           $815.00

Monies will purchase DVD’s that enhance the school’s science curriculum.  Students will benefit from access to new science concepts and enhanced technology. The DVD’s replace some aged science videos in poor condition.

Chariho High School, Elisabeth Sinwell, Library Media Specialist             $490.00

Funds will purchase copies of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers.  Access to the handbook will help students understand and follow the complex aspects of careful recording, research, and documentation. Ultimately, they will write better research papers.

Total Funds Awarded in Spring of 2005                                   $5291.00

Grants Funded in Fall of 2005

Chariho Career & Technical Center, Linda Musch                              $700.00

This project proposes having Culinary Arts students from the technical center visit each Chariho elementary school to teach students from kindergarten through 4th grade about the value of eating healthier snacks. The funding covers the cost of healthy snack foods and transportation.

Chariho Career & Technical Center, Grace M. Pagel                          $900.00

This grant will provide students in the EMT Training Program with transportation to emergency rooms in local hospitals so that they can gain a greater appreciation for the operation of emergency medical facilities. It will also bus them to ambulance corps  facilities so they can accompany EMT personnel to accident scenes.

Chariho Regional H.S., Library Media Center, Mary Moen              $1000.00

This funds the continuation of a successful reading program that CCEP has funded since 2003. Each year a carefully chosen book is circulated among students, teachers, staff and parents to be read and then talked about at various in school and after school discussions that promote inter-generation communications. This year’s book is Shadow Divers by  Robert Kurson. It is a true adventure tale from WWII.

Chariho Career & Technical Center, Jill Shurtleff                              $1000.00

The funds will be used to introduce Cosmetology students to the need for community

service. Students will provide free services such as hair styling at nearby senior housing facilities. Through the program they will gain a better understanding of the needs and difficulties facing seniors with limited budgets. The interaction between the age groups will help their transition to their chosen career.

Chariho Career & Technical Center, Ken Bickford                             $600.00

The goal of the project is to expose grade 9 students to the opportunities available in the construction industry. Students will solicit construction projects from Chariho schools and the community. The funds will purchase the building supplies needed to implement the selected projects.

Chariho Career & Technical Center, Jeff Domingoes                      $1000.00

The grant will be used to purchase the software needed to implement the control of all the Computers in a classroom from a single work station.
