Grants Awarded 2004

Chariho Community Educational Projects Grants

Grants Awarded in the Spring and Fall 2004 Cycle

·         Richmond Elementary School, Grades 3 - 4; Contact:  Maureen Ciuryla,  maureen.ciuryla@chariho.k12.ri.us   $500.00

The project uses audio tapes with books to help students overcome severe reading disabilities. Students listen to the tapes created by professional storytellers and by parents who have volunteered about 42 hours of recording time. The tapes help students better comprehend the book they are reading.  The funding buys the storyteller tapes and the books used in the project.

·         Chariho Middle School Reading Program; Contact: Susan Davis, susan.davis@chariho.k12.ri.us   $1000.00

The middle school Reading Lab will create home/school partnerships of students, teachers and parents to help all parties better understand their role in improving student reading skills.  This after school project includes teacher-parent workshops, discussion groups, book talks and a variety of other reading activities. CCEP funds are used to buy the books, magazines and other teaching tools.

·         Ashaway Elementary School, Grades 3 – 5; Contact: Kelly Gordon , kelly.gordon@chariho.k12.ri.us   $1000.00

The project promotes healthier lifestyles among students by supplying them with pedometers to monitor time spent achieving physical  activity milestones set by the physical education staff.  The pedometers allow them to measure exactly the time and energy expended on  a designated activity.  Funding goes toward the purchase of  31 pedometers for the project.

·         Chariho High School, Social Studies Dept; Contact: James Peters, james.peters@chariho.k12.ri.us   $1000.00

This project increases students’ awareness of the history of the three towns in the school district.  The students research the people, events, history, architecture and resources of the tri-town area and then prepare web-based, electronic presentations that can be accessed by local residents and visitors to community.  The CCEP funds match a $1000 anonymous donation to start the project.

·         Chariho High School, Library Media Ctr; Contact: Elizabeth Sinwell, elizabeth.sinwell@chariho.k12.ri.us   $500.00

The goal is to teach students to use oral, written and graphic means to better communicate with an audience. The funds will buy the computer tools needed to create effective multi-media presentations.  The funding buys the hardware and software needed to create effective multi-media presentation skills that are an important element of their graduation portfolio.

·         Richmond Elementary School, 3rd Grade; Contacts: Jeanne Garr & Martha Stuart, jeanne.garr@chariho.k12.ri.us   $1000.00

The project will purchase three Roamer Robots that can be “taught” to draw various geometric shapes. The robots will help young students convert mental images into real geometric designs.  With them they can better explore using visual images, spatial reasoning and geometric modeling to solve problems.

·         Woman’s Resource Center of South County;  Contact: Amy Retsinus & Alicia Cipriano, acipriano@wrcsc.org   $500.00

The project creates support groups that are open to female high school students who wish to discuss issues involving relationships and gender in an educational and confidential setting.  Such support groups were requested by the CHS student body after a presentation to them by the WRC in 2003.

·         Chariho High School Media Center; Contacts: Elizabeth Sinwell & Mary Moen; elizabeth.sinwell@chariho.k12.ri.us   $1,000.00

The grant continues the community-wide program started last spring with a CCEP grant. A book is selected and copies are circulated throughout the community to be read by students, parents and faculty. The book is then discussed in various after-hours programs throughout the tri-town area. This year’s book is The Kite Runner.

·         Chariho Middle School, Technology Students Association; Contact: Paul DiRita, paulderita@cox.net   $900.00

The grant partially funds an after school program to improve students’ critical thinking skills by having them build robots from Lego Mindstorm robotics kits. The technology students then compete with other groups at the local and state level. The CCEP funds will buy a portable computer to take to competitions so the robots’ skills can be changed in the field.

The next two projects were combined so they can share  resources.

·         Chariho High School After School Art Club; Contact: Synora Matacia, synoramatacia@chariho.k12.ri.us   $900.00

·         Chariho High School Arts Center; Contact: Debra Engel, engeljk@cox.net                                                         $900.00

These two grants approach arts appreciation using different mediums namely pottery and painting, but culminate in a Public Gallery Night and have a common the need for a display case to safely display students’ art projects.  The two $900 awards are for art materials.  The Chariho Vocational School will build the display case so an additional $500 is allocated to the votech school to cover its cost.

The two following projects were merged and will share resources.

·         Charlestown Elementary School, Grade 4; Contacts: Heidi Fee & Susan Killingbeck, heidifee@cox.net   $300.00

·         Charlestown Elementary School, Grade 2; Contact: Laurie Pearce, ljpea@chariho.k12.ri.us                     $300.00

Both projects involve wildlife observation requiring bird feeders of various types, binoculars and other materials. Grade 4 is creating a mini wildlife refuge adjacent to the school where they can log their observations of wildlife behavior and create a multi-media presentation from it. Each Grade 2 student will select a bird species and create an illustrated guide to the habits of the selected species.
