Chariho Community Educational Projects Grants Grants Awarded in the Spring and Fall 2003 Cycle
Four grants were awarded in the spring of 2003. The recipients and projects are:
· Chariho Middle School, 6th Grade – Jennifer Gleason, jen.gleason@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000.00 A project to create vivid mental imagery using descriptive language. Funding is for digital cameras for students to take pictures of scenic South County locations and then create vivid written descriptions of these places from the photos.
· Chariho Middle School Library Media Center – kate.kelley@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000.00 A project to improve the 6th grade student magazine by purchasing desktop publishing software for the media center. Software eventually will be used for many middle school applications.
· Chariho Middle School Library – michelle.steever@chariho.k12.ri.us $1400.00 A project to foster a passion for reading good literature by involving 5th grade students from the Middle School, Hope Valley and Ashaway schools in the Rooster Games. The games will apply information learned from assigned readings to activities, contests and creative thinking exercises.
· Charlestown Elementary School PTO – Holly Eaves, hollyeaves@cox.net $1000.00 Funding for expansion of the elementary school playground for children ages 5 – 12. Total cost of the project is $24,000 with $12,000 in hand and $10,000 pledged from Town of Charlestown.
Five grants were awarded in the fall of 2003. A sixth grant was awarded conditi0nally.
· Chariho Middle School, Library Media Center – Kate Kelley, kate.kelley@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000.00 Funds to be used to purchase 29 books on tape or CD to create an audio library for all students at Chariho Middle School. Audio books address the needs of students who are struggling and reluctant readers.
· Ashaway Elementary School – Karen Mann, karen.mann@chariho k12.ri.us $910.00 Award to be used to increase student awareness of cultural diversity. The project will focus on the culture of Mexico and involve the entire school for the full school year. Students will be introduced to performers, authors, guest artists, books and foods from Mexico. Celebrations of several Mexican holidays are included.
· Charlestown Elementary School, 3rd Grade Class – Lori Rathbone, lori.rathbone@chariho.k12.ri.us $500.00 Funds will enhance an existing project that provides a unique way for the class to learn about other communities. Since 1998, two puppets have traveled by Internet from Charlestown Elementary to schools in other towns. Receiving students append a journal that travels with the puppets. This money will be used to buy 10 U.S. Atlases so students can better understand the routes puppets travel and regions they visit.
· Chariho High School, Library Media Center – Elizabeth Sinwell, elizabeth.sinwell@chariho.k12.ri.us $1000.00 The project will buy 100 copies of Sue Monk Kidd’s book The Secret Life of Bees and then enlist students, teachers, parents and other interested individuals from the entire Chariho area to read the book. Throughout the year, activities such as group discussions, online projects and field trips will be created that revolve around the book. The program will bring together the high school and adult communities to read the same book, uniting them in a common experience centered on literacy.
· Chariho Middle School, Library Media Center – Michelle Steever, michelle.steever@chariho.k12.ri.us $715.00 The funding will be used to purchase the cameras and software needed to create, edit and publish an online newspaper for the Chariho Middle school. Students will experience the world of journalists, editors, photographers, layout designers, website managers and other newspaper publishing staff. The newspaper will appear on the Middle School website.
· Hope Valley Elementary School – Elizabeth Pare. uerj2065@aol.com $1000.00 Funding for this project is granted only if monetary commitments are obtained from other sources that will fully fund the project. The project engages all of the school’s students in creating an interactive mural that depicts Hopkinton’s past, present and future. The mural will focus on Main St. and nine other familiar town destinations. Each of the sites will have an informational flip pad next to its picture. A local artist will assist the students in creating the mural.
Total value of the grants awarded in 2003, including the conditional grant, is $9525.00.
